How St Aidan’s Catholic Academy Rebuilt Its Network for Faster, More Reliable Learning

St Aidan’s Catholic Academy

Overview

St Aidan's Catholic Academy is an all-boys school in Sunderland with origins dating back to 1928. With around 900 students, it has an outstanding reputation for academic achievement and is committed to helping every boy reach his full potential.

Headteacher Glenn Sanderson recognised that the school's legacy IT was holding it back.

The Challenge

Technology underpins much of the school's teaching and learning, but its network was slow and unreliable, with bottlenecks and design faults that made for a poor experience for staff and students.

The school wanted a partner that could fix its immediate problems and support its future ambitions, with a fully managed service desk covering first, second and third-line support.

It really was like working in the dark. We had network bottlenecks and there were clearly faults within the existing network design.

The Solution

We started with an on-site audit, working alongside the school's ICT Operational Lead. It showed an over-complicated network design causing multiple bottlenecks and faults, and storage that was no longer supported by the manufacturer.

We then met the headteacher, leadership team and teaching staff, so everyone had a voice in shaping the project.

The solution was to streamline the network with a complete server refresh, two new storage area networks, and fully rebuilt network switches, reconfigured to be more manageable, more secure and much faster.

Customer Feedback

We now have a robust and reliable network that not only supports the school’s needs today, but into the future too. We now have the technology in place that allows us to mirror exactly the teaching curriculum that would in usual circumstances take place in the classroom.

The Result

The work was completed over the summer holidays with no disruption to teaching. We also rolled out Windows 10 across the school.

New computers can now be deployed across the network in under 15 minutes, with remote patching and software distribution saving valuable time. The network is far more efficient, reliable and secure, with a dramatic improvement in speed.

When the pandemic changed how lessons were delivered, the school was ready, able to mirror its classroom curriculum online and achieve 93% online attendance.
